Empty Bowls Detroit, is a non profit organization which has held a special place in the heart of Helen Velas for many years.  The organization raises money and awareness for Cass Community Social Services. CCSS, is a Detroit-based agency which dedicates itself to providing food, shelter, job programs and health services for those in need.  As an active participant, Helen helps throughout the year with the Empty Bowls events including hosting events at her home as well as volunteering for their main event each year in March.  The history of Empty Bowls dates back to 1990 with a Michigan art teacher and his wife.  The challenge to his students was to create enough ceramic bowls for the entire school staff to use as serving pieces for soup at a school fundraiser.  The idea at the fundraiser was to give people information on hunger along with keeping the bowl they ate from which was now empty.  These beautiful hand painted bowls would remind guests of all the empty bowls in the world. A very powerful message that has raised millions of dollars across the United States and Canada.
